Crowning Jesus Lord Of All
The Hymn about the coronation of Jesus, not surprisingly, was written by an Englishman. Magnificent pageantry and historical remembrance are involved in a coronation. The lines of the hymn contain suggestions of royal pageantry with imagery from both Old and New Testaments. “Coronation,” the tune most used in America, was composed in 1792 by Oliver Holden. A carpenter by trade, Holden helped rebuild Charleston, Massachusetts, after it had been burned by the British in the Revolutionary War. He later ran a general store, taught singing in schools, and published several collections of songs. His tombstone in a Boston cemetery is inscribed with the first stanza of this hymn.
